Ang Prolife Partylist (“Ang Prolife”) condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the disproportionate response to farmers’ protest that resulted in the senseless and dastardly killings of farmers in Kidapawan City yesterday, April 1, 2016. According to reports, the police allegedly gunned down the protesters after the latter have thrown stones at them during the protest. There were also reports that the protest was staged in support of a candidate for a national position, and was backed by leftist groups. We ask for a thorough investigation that will cast light on what truly transpired on that day so that justice may be served promptly to those seeking it and those hiding away from it.
Ang Prolife believes in the sanctity of human life in all stages, for all people, whether rich or poor, young or old. We also believe in every person’s right to strive for the fullness of life. It is very basic that the right to survive hunger is a matter of life or death, especially to the poorest of the poor, to the very young, and to the very old. The use of guns was unreasonable. On the other hand, exploitation of our poor farmers for some political ends and selfish interests is very much unacceptable. Though we do not condone violence in any form, we believe that these poor farmers, up in arms against the government because of hunger and poverty, had every right to clamor and ask for what is theirs.
We ask our brethren to pray for the farmers who were killed, as well as the ones who had lived to recount the ghastly events of that day, which shall be infamously remembered as Black Friday. The guns may have silenced their lips but Ang Prolife will honor their deeds and their memories through legislation that will benefit the agricultural sector and will truly empower our farmers.
May God bless our country.
